Don S. Montgomery was born in Louisville, Kentucky on 10 December 1945. He enlisted in the Navy in November 1965, subsequently serving as a Gunner's Mate in Vietnam War riverine operations. Severely wounded in action on 18 October 1967, he was medically retired from Naval service in September 1970. After working with the Jefferson County (Kentucky) Police Department for more than a decade, in 1980 he moved to the Washington, D.C. area to begin employment with the Naval Photographic Center (later renamed the Naval Media Center). He was active there as a civilian photographer and photographic accessionist until retiring from the Federal Government in March 2006.
