Formal Surrender of Japan, 2 September 1945 --
Activities immediately after the Ceremonies

Following the ceremonies, the Allied delegates and spectators began to leave USS Missouri. General MacArthur boarded a destroyer at 9:58 AM to be transported back to Yokohama. Fleet Admiral Nimitz left by boat at 10:44 and was soon back on board USS South Dakota. Remaining on Missouri, Admiral Halsey enjoyed a conversation with his old friend, Vice Admiral John S. McCain, who would be fatally stricken by a heart attack just four days later.

This page features photographs of Admirals Halsey and McCain in conversation and of the return to shore of General MacArthur and the Japanese delegates.
