Jeannette Arctic exploring expedition, 1879-1881
Sketch by Chief Engineer George Melville, showing how USS Jeannette's
ceiling timber was crushed against a reinforcing truss by the
pressure of the Arctic ice, during the winter of 1879-1880. The
damage was discovered in the port coal bunker on 4 March 1880
and was about 3/4 inch deep. The wood was Oregon pine.
