The original photograph carries the date July 1943, with "1942" hand written on this print. The Sailor circled in the second row is Franklin F. Pierce.
Note the many temporary "Petty Officers" among the recruit trainees in this group.

Donation of Nancy Simonson, 2005, from the collection of Franklin Frederick Pierce (1916-2003), who served in USS Herzog (DE-178) and USS LSM-122 during World War II.
