"Proposed B. S. [Battleships] Nos. 38 & 39" ... Scheme "M" ... March 23, 1912

Preliminary design plan for Fiscal Year 1913 battleships. This plan is very similar to that of the preceding Scheme "L" (see Photo # S-584-016) but instead employed turbine rather than reciprocating steam main propulsion machinery, permitting one-half knot additional maximum speed and some minor adjustments in dimensions. This plan apparently was never sent to the General Board but rather reflected interest within the Bureau of Construction & Repair about the implications of twin turret designs. Selection of a 15-inch gun, a caliber not in development for the U.S. Navy, illustrated a hypothetical larger caliber for a ship having fewer main battery guns.
This plan provides eight 15-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 21 knots in a ship 610 feet long on the load water line (L.W.L.), 95.9 feet in beam, with a normal displacement of 30,800 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on paper (black on white).

The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
