Photo #: S-584-122 "200-Ft. Sub Chaser--Diesel Design" ... November 28, 1917 Preliminary design plan for a diesel-powered submarine chaser, prepared in response to a proposal for such a medium-sized anti-submarine vessel made in a letter of 28 October 1917 by the Special Board on Anti-Submarine Devices. Navy Chief Constructor David W. Taylor provided some initial draft characteristics for the preliminary design on 5 November 1917, and he reviewed this resulting plan on 26 December. Industrialish Henry Ford met with Taylor on 28 December and his mass-production "Eagle Boat" design was developed from the turbine- driven version of this concept (see Photo # S-584-121). This plan provides two 4-inch guns, diesel machinery, and a speed of 19.5 knots in a ship 200 feet long on the water line, 24 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 500 tons. The plan assumed use of the same diesel installation as the submarine Schley (Submarine # 52). Note: The original document was a blueprint (white on dark blue). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph. Online Image: 505KB; 2450 x 1070 pixels |
