Preliminary Design Plan for a "Destroyer Leader" ... Undated
A preliminary design plan for a destroyer leader, prepared by the Navy’s
design office to depict the implementation of a Bath Iron Works proposal
made in January 1918 for a new "enlarged destroyer" for the Navy.
A rough draft of characteristics for this design included in Preliminary
Design Book # 192 is dated 19 April 1918, suggesting that this drawing
was made soon afterward. A subsequent series of plans investigated a
range of possibilities in building vessels of this general type but
none was pursued beyond an early stage. A contract with Bath to
provide design support was signed on 29 May but Bath reportedly lost interest
when the Navy settled on a larger, 2200-ton design soon afterwards.
This plan provided five 5-inch guns, geared turbine machinery, and
a speed of 33.8 knots in a ship 325 feet long on the waterline, 32.6
feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 1,525 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
