Preliminary Design Plan for "1919 Fleet Submarine" ...
January 6, 1920
Preliminary design plan for a "Fleet Submarine" for the
Fiscal Year 1919 shipbuilding program. This plan, derived from "Scheme L"
of a series of candidate preliminary designs, was forwarded to the Secretary of
the Navy on 9 January 1920 and was the basis for the beginning of contract plan
preparation in mid-January 1920. This preliminary design was approved by the
Navy Department on 9 March 1920 but many detail changes were made before
contract plans were approved on 21 July 1920. The three submarines of the
V-1 (Submarine # 163, later Barracuda, SS-163) class were
built to these plans.
This plan provided one 5-inch gun, diesel-electric machinery, and a surface
speed of 21 knots in a ship 325 feet long on the waterline, 24 feet 8
inches in beam, and with a normal surface displacement of 1,900 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
