Preliminary Design Plan for a "Self-Propelled Floating Dry Dock" ... September 25, 1920
Preliminary design plan for a Self-Propelled Floating Dry Dock. Comdr. D.C. Webb
of the Civil Engineer Corps, a Naval War College student, proposed a self-deploying
dry dock to support "overseas naval campaigns" in a letter dated 5 March 1920 to
the War College President. The College President in turn forwarded the letter to
the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OpNav), endorsing its importance.
OpNav invited recommendations from the material bureaus, resulting in this drawing,
sent by the Chief, Bureau of Construction and Repair on 12 October 1920 to the CNO.
The concept was not pursued.
This plan provided a docking space 115 feet wide, electric drive machinery, and a
speed of 10 knots in a vessel 1,050 feet long on the waterline, 175 feet in beam on
the waterline, and with a normal, unloaded displacement of about 53,700 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).
The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
