"Preliminary Study # 1 ... Air Craft Carrier ... 29-1/2 knot", November 26, 1920 (lower half)

Lower half of a preliminary design plan for an aircraft carrier for the Fiscal Year 1922 shipbuilding program (Preliminary Study # 1). This drawing was prepared by the Bureau of Construction and Repair in response to draft characteristics provided by the General Board on 6 November 1920 in order for the bureau to be able to discuss design tradeoffs at a planned General Board hearing. This version was the smallest of the three developed. It fell well short in speed below the 35 knots sought. No ships were built to this concept, which was superseded by new designs in 1921 (see Photo # S-584-179.)
This plan provided sixteen 6-inch guns, electric drive machinery, and a speed of 29.5 knots in a ship 675 feet long on the waterline, 80 feet in waterline beam, and with a normal displacement of 25,500 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on paper (black on white).

The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
