Photo #: S-584-175 Preliminary Design Plan for a "10750 Ton Scout" Cruiser, Scheme "a" ... March 14, 1921 Preliminary design drawing for a scout cruiser. This design was one of many considered in the process of settling on the plans adopted for the Pensacola (CL-24) class of Fiscal Year 1926. This sketch was one of a set of five alternative designs (see Photos # S-584-174 to S-584-178) presented to the General Board in March 1921. This design provided four twin 8-inch gun turrets, two forward and two aft. The drawing illustrated two alternative possible arrangements of deck armor protection. This plan differed from" "Scheme # 1" (see Photo # S-584-174) in having reduced speed, permitting reduced size and cost. This plan provided eight 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 33 knots in a ship 610 feet long on the waterline, 57 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 10,750 tons. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
