Photo #: S-584-199 Light Cruiser ... Design # 4 ... January 12, 1925 Preliminary design plan for a cruiser to be built under treaty limitations covering ships of up to 10,000 tons treaty displacement. This drawing represents a design that met most General Board characteristics for a ship that might be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design provided the same heavy main gun armament as the baseline design (see Photo # S-584-190) but sacrificed some speed to obtain light armor protection and reduced weights. This incomplete sketch is very similar to the previous plan (see Photo # S-584-198) but placed all boilers together amidships in two compartments and used a single combined funnel. This plan provided twelve 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 32.5 knots in a ship 600 feet long on the waterline, and with a normal displacement of 11,410 tons. Note: The original document was pencil and ink on paper (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
