John Ortega was born in 1840 in Spain. He emigrated to the United States and resided in Pennsylvania. Ortega entered in the U.S. Navy from that state and served on board the Sloop of War Saratoga during the U.S. Civil War. In August and September of 1864, he served twice with landing parties from his ship during the Union blockade. For the courageous and gallant performance of his duties on these occasions, Ortega was awarded the Medal of Honor and promoted to the rating of Acting Master's Mate.
