Anna Belle, a 37.9-foot motor boat built in 1898 for civilian use, was based at Chincoteague, Virginia. She was chartered by the Navy in June 1917 and placed in commission in August of that year as USS Anna Belle (SP-1206). After being employed on section patrol duties in the vicinity of Norfolk and Hampton Roads, Virginia, she was decommissioned and returned to her owner in December 1918.
