S.S. Dakotan (American Freighter, 1912).
Served as USS Dakotan (ID # 3882) in 1919.
Became Soviet S.S. Zyrianin in 1942

Dakotan, a 6657 gross ton (14,375-tons displacement) freighter, was built in 1912 at Sparrows Point, Maryland. She operated commercially for the first six years of her long career, but in late January 1919 was acquired by the U.S. Navy and placed in commission as USS Dakotan (ID # 3882). She served as a troop transport while in Naval service, making five voyages to bring U.S. World War I veterans home from France. Dakotan was decommissioned at the end of July 1919 and returned to her owner, the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company.

Dakotan then returned to civilian employment, remaining part of the American-Hawaiian line until well into World War II. In December 1942 she was transferred to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program. Renamed Zyrianin, she was part of the Soviet merchant fleet for many decades and did not disappear from shipping registers until the early 1970s.

This page features all the views we have concerning the freighter Dakotan of 1912, USS Dakotan (ID # 3882) of 1919 and the Soviet S.S. Zyrianin.
