Progressive (American Harbor Tug, 1916).
Served as USS Progressive (ID # 2003) in 1918-1919
Progressive, a 77 gross ton steam harbor tug, was built
at West New Brighton, New York, in 1916. She was chartered by
the Navy in September 1917. She served as USS Progressive
(ID # 2003) in the New York City and Long Island Sound areas until
returned to her owner in early August 1919.
This page features the only views we have concerning the
harbor tug Progressive, which served as USS Progressive
(ID # 2003) in 1918-1919.

Progressive (American Harbor Tug, 1916)
In port, probably in the New York City area, circa 1916-1917.
Chartered by the Navy on 7 September 1917, this tug served as
USS Progressive (ID # 2003) during and after World War
I. She was returned to her owner on 6 August 1919.

USS Westchester (ID # 3103)
In port, circa the late summer or fall of 1918.
Built in 1896, this small tug (seen in the center of the photograph)
was chartered by the Navy on 4 September 1918 and returned to
her owner on 14 August 1919.
Though Westchester's data card gives her number as ID
3103, "S.P. 3103" is painted on her bow.
USS Progressive (ID # 2003) is tied up alongside Westchester.
The bow of USS Blue Bird (SP-465) is visible at left.
USS Mustang (SP-36) is in the left middle distance.
