Viking (American Steam Yacht, 1909)

Viking, a 178-foot steam yacht, was built at Wilmington, Delaware in 1909. In 1917, probably at about the time the United States entered World War I in the spring, she was examined for possible Navy service and assigned the registry number SP-618. Though orders for her acquisition were issued in June 1917, she apparently was not taken over and remained in civilian hands.

This page features our only views of the steam yacht Viking.

Viking
(American Steam Yacht, 1909)

Halftone reproduction of a photograph of Viking in harbor, prior to World War I. This yacht was surveyed for possible Navy First World War service and assigned the "Section Patrol" registry number SP-618, but was not taken over.
She has been confused in some sources with another Viking, a motor boat without a "SP" number, and was erroneously listed as Naval late in 1918.

The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
