Eight different design schemes are known to have been prepared for Allen M. Sumner (DD-692) class destroyers. Seven of these designs are presented here. The eighth is represented via reference to a view offered by another organization, in the lower section of another sheet. Seven of the eight designs were originally prepared for destroyers, and are numbered in the "D" series. The eighth (Design 11A) was prepared for aircraft carriers (numbered in the "A" series), but was also applied to destroyers.
Two of the schemes (Designs 16D and 25D -- both shown here)
used the Measure 31 colors of Dull Black (BK), Ocean Gray
(5-O) and Haze Gray (5-H) on their vertical surfaces. In addition,
Measure 32 colors were occasionally used with these designs for
individual ships.
Initials appearing on most of these drawings indicate that the designer/draftsman in all but one of the Measure 31 and Measure 32 designs was Everett Warner ("EW"), with Lewis W. Rubinstein ("LWR") responsible for the exception. Everett Warner also initialled two of the three sets of Measure 33a drawings (27D and 30D), while that for Design 28D (redrawn decades later) was not initialled.
