S.S. Arizona, 5164 gross ton passenger steamer, was built at Glasgow, Scotland, in 1879. The first of her many voyages between Liverpool and New York began at the end of May. On 7 November 1879, while steaming at high speed eastbound in the North Atlantic, she collided with an iceberg and sustained serious damage to her bow. Arizona was repaired and returned to trans-Atlantic service, making a record-breaking trip in May 1880. She remained active until 1894 and was then laid up.
Rebuilt with new engines, one smokestack in place of her original two, sailing rig removed and gross tonnage recomputed to 5305, Arizona was sold to the U.S. War Department in 1898, at the time of the Spanish-American War. Renamed Hancock, she was subsequently employed as a U.S. Army Transport. In November 1902 she was transferred to the U.S. Navy and began more than two decades of service as USS Hancock. The old ship was sold in May 1926.
