USS Arctic, a 1537-ton side-wheel steamer built in 1873, was obtained for use during the Spanish-American War. Commissioned in July 1898, she served in the Delaware River area as a refrigerator ship. After decommissioning in August 1898, Arctic was returned to her owner, the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
