USS Antigone (ID # 3007), 1917-1919

USS Antigone, a 17,024-ton transport, was built in Germany in 1900 as the German passenger liner Neckar. She was laid up at Baltimore, Maryland, after the outbreak of World War I made it generally impossible for German merchant vessels to operate at sea. Seized when the United States entered the War in April 1917, she was turned over to the Navy in July and converted to a transport. Renamed Antigone at the beginning of September 1917 and placed in commission a few days later, she completed outfitting at Norfolk, Virginia, and began active service in late November.

Between mid-December 1917 and the end of the fighting in November 1918, Antigone made eight round-trip voyages to France, carrying cargo and over 16,000 troops to the war zone. After the Armistice she reversed the flow, bringing more than 22,000 men home from Europe by September 1919, when she was decommissioned. Antigone was then turned over to the War Department for operation as a U.S. Army transport.
