-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --

USS Cigarette (SP-1234), 1917-1920.
Originally Steam Yacht Cigarette (1905)

Cigarette, a 125-foot fast (22 knot) steam yacht, was built in 1905 by George Lawley & Sons of Neponsett, Massachusetts. Though purchased by the Navy in mid-September 1917 and soon placed in commission as USS Cigarette (SP-1234), she appears to have actually been in active Navy service since at least mid-June of that year. During and after World War I Cigarette was assigned to the First Naval District and performed patrol duties in New England Waters. She also deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, probably in 1919. USS Cigarette was decommissioned in July 1919 and sold in October 1920.

This page features, and provides links to, a broad selection of the views we have concerning USS Cigarette (SP-1234) and the steam yacht Cigarette of 1905.

Photographed in port, prior to her World War I era Naval service. The photograph has been roughly retouched to indicate Cigarette's mast and to note a mast belonging to another craft.
This yacht, owned by C.A. Wood of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was acquired by the Navy on 17 September 1917 and commissioned two days later as USS Cigarette (SP-1234), but appears to have been in active Naval service for some months previously. She was sold on 29 October 1920.

The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
