USS Katie (SP-660), 1917-1918.
Previously civilian motor boat Katie (1916)

USS Katie, a 15-ton motor boat, was built in 1916 at Crittenden, Virginia, for the Virginia Fish and Oyster Commission. The Navy chartered her for World War I service and placed her in commission in April 1917. She subsequently served as a patrol craft in the James River, Chesapeake Bay and lower Potomac River. Katie was decommissioned and returned to her owner in October 1918.

This page features our only view of USS Katie (SP-660).

Related photograph: The "SP" data card for Katie (SP-660) contains the original print for Photo # NH 99499, the probable result of a clerical error when the card was prepared in 1917. The craft shown in this photograph is actually Owaissa, a motor boat built in 1912 which served as USS Owaissa (SP-659) in 1917-1919. Katie and Owaissa were of very different configurations, the former being a working boat and the latter a pleasure craft.
