USS Leyte, a 4611-ton internal combustion engine repair ship, was built at Baltimore, Maryland, under Maritime Commission contract as a "Liberty" type freighter. She was turned over to the Navy in February 1944, soon after launch, and placed in commission in mid-August of that year. In early October Leyte left the East Coast for the Pacific, arriving at Hollandia, New Guinea, in late November. She served there as a repair ship with the Seventh Fleet until February 1945, when she moved up to the Philippines. At the end of May 1945 the ship was renamed Maui, releasing her original name for use on a new aircraft carrier. After some nine months of service at Subic Bay, the ship left the former western Pacific war zone in December 1945, transporting more than a thousand veterans home to the West Coast. USS Maui decommissioned at San Diego, California, at the end of August 1946 and was laid up there. In June 1961 she was moved to the National Defense Reserve Fleet facility at Suisun Bay, California, and in September 1962 transferred to the Maritime Administration. She remained inactive for the next decade, though custody was briefly returned to the Navy in February-April 1967. Maui was sold for scrapping in October 1972.
