Lake Gedney, a 2333 gross ton freighter, was built at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1918 as part of the World War I shipbuilding program. She was acquired by the Navy and placed in commission as USS Lake Gedney (ID # 3765-C) in September 1918. The ship soon crossed the Atlantic to began several months of employment transporting coal between Great Britain and France. She returned to the United States in August 1919 with a cargo of ammunition. Lake Gedney was decommissioned in the middle of that month and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board, which retained her until 1926, when she was sold for scrapping.
