S.S. Lake Charlotte, a 2239 gross ton freighter, was ordered as the British ship War Cymbal but was taken over by the United States Government before construction began. Renamed Lake Charlotte, she was completed in June 1918 at Ashtabula, Ohio. Her maiden trans-Atlantic voyage, taking U.S. Army materiel to the British Isles, was made as a civilian ship. The Navy took her over at Cardiff, Wales in mid-October 1918, placing her in commission as USS Lake Charlotte (ID # 4394). She was thereafter employed carrying coal and general cargo between British and French ports. In August 1919, the ship steamed back to the United States with a load of ammunition. She was decommissioned in September 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. Sold to the Ford Motor Company in 1927, Lake Charlotte was then scrapped at Dearborn, Michigan.
