USS PCE-843, a 185-foot patrol escort vessel, was built at Chicago, Illinois. Following a delivery voyage down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, she was commissioned in February 1944 and served in the Caribbean and West Indies region for the rest of the year. Transferred to the Pacific in January 1945, PCE-843 performed escort and patrol duties in southwestern Pacific and the Philippines waters until June 1945. She then became a weather ship in the Philippines area, an assignment that lasted for nearly a year before she returned to the United States. PCE-843 was active for almost a decade more, operating along the East Coast and in the Caribbean. Decommissioned in March 1955, in February 1956 she was renamed Skowhegan (PCE-843) but saw no further active service. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in July 1960 and sold in 1961.
This page features the only view we have concerning USS PCE-843, which was renamed Skowhegan (PCE-843) in 1956.
