USS Privateer (SP-179, later YP-179), 1917-1930

USS Privateer, a 108-foot motorboat, was built at Morris Heights, New York, acquired by the Navy in May 1917, and commissioned in August 1917. During World War I she carried out coastal patrols in the 3rd Naval District, headquartered at New York. One of a small number of SP (Section Patrol) boats retained for peacetime service, she continued to operate in the 3rd Naval District after the war. Designated YP-179 in 1920, Privateer was transferred to the U. S. Shipping Board in June 1930.

This page features our only views of USS Privateer (SP-179, later YP-179).
