USS Rowan, a 182-ton torpedo boat, was built at Seattle, Washington, and placed in commission at the beginning of April 1899. She was decommissioned a month later, following trials, and remained in that status until resuming commissioned service in April 1908. She then began operations along the Pacific coast of the U.S. and Mexico. USS Rowan was decommissioned in late October 1912 and stricken from the Navy list. She was sold for scrap in June 1918.
USS Rowan was named in honor of Vice Admiral Stephen C. Rowan (1808-1890), whose long Navy career included service in the Mexican War and the Civil War, and command of the Asiatic Squadron in 1867-1870.
