USS Shark (SP-534), 1917-1919.
Originally the Civilian Motor Boat Ildico IV and Shark
Ildico IV, a 74-foot 4-inch motor boat, was built in
1909 at South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, for use as a pleasure craft.
Later renamed Shark, she was purchased by the Navy in May
1917 and placed in commission as USS Shark (SP-534). During
and after World War I, the boat operated on patrol service in
the New England area. She was stricken from the Navy list in mid-September
1919 and sold during the following month.

Hauled out of the water, circa 1917-1919.
This former pleasure boat, built in 1909 and formerly named Ildico
IV, was acquired by the Navy on 17 May 1917 and placed in
commission on 24 May 1917. She was stricken on 16 September 1919
and sold on 20 October 1919.

USS Shark (SP-534)
Hauled out of the water, circa 1917-1919.
This motor boat was built in 1909 for use as a pleasure craft.
Formerly named Ildico IV, she was acquired by the Navy
on 17 May 1917 and placed in commission on 24 May 1917. USS Shark
was stricken on 16 September 1919 and sold on 20 October 1919.

Note: The Ships' Histories Branch of the Naval Historical
Center holds one other photo of the motor boat Shark,
taken prior to her Navy service.
This image was taken from an elevated position, off Shark's
port side and somewhat toward her stern, while she was underway
in coastal waters. Her hull is painted white and she does not
have much superstructure. The boat also does not have the bow
bulwark seen in the views presented above. Shark is flying
the U.S. Yacht Ensign aft and has a pennant and another small
flag on her jackstaff.
