USS Utowana (SP-951), 1918-1920.
Previously the civilian trawler Utowana. Later possibly
renamed Victorine
USS Utowana, a 414 gross ton minesweeper and patrol
vessel, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1891 as a
steam yacht. Rebuilt as a trawler in 1917 at Staten Island, New
York, she was taken over by the Navy in the summer of that year
and placed in commission at the end of October. She left the U.S.
in November 1917, en route across the Atlantic by way of Bermuda
and the Azores. Arriving in France in February 1918, Utowana
carried out coastal escort and patrol service for the rest of
World War I. She remained in European waters, performing salvage
and repair duties, until the summer of 1919, when she returned
to the United States. Utowana was decommissioned in September
1919 and sold in September 1920. She may have been renamed Victorine
after returning to civilian employment.
This page features all the views we have concerning USS
Utowana (SP-951) and the civilian trawler Utowana.
